Patriotic History of Udaipur (Former Kingdom of Mewar)

Chittorgarh was the previous capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar. Maharana Udai Singh was a successor of the Sisodias, who claimed to be the descendants of the Sun God. The Sisodias are believed to be the oldest ruling family in the world. Amongst the warrior clans, Sisodias are recognized as the most powerful ones in Rajasthan. Another reason for shifting the capital from Chittorgarh to Udaipur was constant attacks of enemies.

In 1568 A.D., Chittorgarh was attacked by the Mughal emperor, Akbar and to ward off this danger, Udai Singh shifted the whole kingdom to Udaipur. Udaipur was naturally safe under the fortification make by Aravali Hills. Since that time, Udaipur developed into a full-fledged city. Slowly when the Mughal Empire undermined, the Sisodias reasserted their freedom. They recaptured most of the parts of Mewar with the exception of the Chittorgarh Fort.

The Palaces and the old City are surrounded by fort walls constructed in the year 1770 with 9 gates. Udaipur continued to be the capital of Mewar, till it became the princely state of British India in 1818. The city has a rich hinterland consisting of natural flora and fauna. Its location amidst the Aravali ranges provides numerous natural beauty spots. Its historical monuments in the forms of Palaces, Havelis, Temples, Kunds, Bavaris surrounded by the hills and a pleasant bracing climate have favoured its growth from a small princely town to an important urban tourist and mineral - trade center.

When India got independent in 1947, the Maharaja of Udaipur granted the place to the Government of India. At that time, Mewar was merged into the state of Rajasthan. City Palace Udaipur is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, construction of which was started by Maharana Udai Singh ji. This white marble architectural marvel, standing majestically on hill is surrounded by crenelated walls. This huge edifice 30.4 meters high and 244 meters long was added on to, by later rulers, but the additions are so well planned and integrated, it is difficult to believe that is was not conceived as a complete structure.

Bara Pol "Great Gate" at City Palace Udaipur
The entrance to the palace is through "Hathi Pol" (The Elephant Gate) along the main street of the old city, past the Jagdish temple. The "Bara Pol" or Great Gate takes one into the first count leading to the Tripolia Gate which has eight carved marble Torans or archways. One is not led to a series of courtyards, overlapping pavilion terraces, corridors and hanging gardens.

Here the eye catches the Suraj Gokhada (Balcony of the Sun) where the "Suryavanshis" (Descendants of the Sun God) the Maharanas of Mewar appeared before their people to sort out their problems.

Glass Mosaics of Peacocks at City Palace
The More Chowk takes its name from the fascinating colored glass mosaics of peacocks which decorate the walls. Eklingji is a temple complexes situated nearly 22 km in the north of Udaipur. It was built in 734 A.D. and consists of 108 temples chiseled out of sandstone and marbles; it is devoted to the royal family of Mewar.

Chittorgarh is About 140 km from Udaipur, Chittorgarh was the capital of Mewar from 734 AD to 1559. Chittorgarh Fort is a massive fort situated on a hilltop near Chittorgarh town in Rajasthan state in India.

Kumbhalgarh Fort
A 15th-century fortress, built by Rana Kumbha of Mewar, with 36 kilometres of walls. Over 360 temples are within the fort. It also has a wildlife sanctuary. Located in Rajsamand District, 64 km from Udaipur.

How To Reach Udaipur

By Air: Udaipur Airport namely Maharana Pratap Airport is located near Dabok at a distance of 22 kms from the city of Udaipur.
